Education empowerment

Through Education Empowerment Children Can Thrive, Survive, Participate, Be Free & Be Heard

Education Empowerment in Thailand

Thailand’s many underprivileged children lack a very basic human right – education. Thailand Volunteers works with educational institutions across the country promoting not only every child’s right to education, but also education empowerment.  Education empowerment is about more than simply learning in the classroom. It is about providing today’s children with the tools and skills to become the leaders of tomorrow. While Thailand has a prosperous capital city, there are many deprived areas in Bangkok and around the country making Thailand very much a developing country. Education is essential in developing countries to equip the youth with the skills to become entrepreneurs, scientists, agriculturists, and leaders, developing the economy of the country for a better tomorrow.

Thailand’s youth are attending school today in higher number than ever before. However, underprivileged children are at a distinct disadvantage due to a lack of resources and education structure. Therefore it is essential to invest not only in the education of these children but also in their empowerment, confidence, and value. Regardless of circumstance, any child has the ability to achieve great things if provided with the opportunity. We work to teach children their value, how they can contribute to their local communities, social skills, moral and spiritual values, and much more.

Why Does Education Empowerment for Children Matter?

Education empowerment for children is a basic human right. Every child deserves to have the opportunity to be the best person they can, but millions of children are denied this basic right due to a lack of education. Opening classrooms to all children, particularly girls, will contribute to breaking down the barriers of poverty, sexism, and other societal issues. This is because education is intrinsically linked to developmental goals such as improving a child’s health, reducing daily hunger, fighting diseases, empowering girls, economic growth, working towards a peaceful society, and much more.

1. Powerful

Children who attend school expand their minds, open their eyes, and become more powerful with knowledge. This power provides them with the skills to change their community, country, or even the world.

2. Understanding

Learning about other countries, cultures, religions, traditions, and history provides children with understanding and tolerance of others. Understanding eliminates hate, promotes respect for others, and opens opportunities.

3. Confidence

Learning breeds confidence. Children who can read and write have the confidence to pursue careers or opportunities that these skills allow. Positive reinforcement in the classroom solidifies their abilities and self-confidence.

4. Healthy

Education empowerment can promote a healthy lifestyle. By introducing the children to natural concepts, teaching them about healthy choices, and promoting physical activity, they can understand the importance of health.

5. Decision Making

Teaching children about morals, problem solving, and values provides them with the chance for independent thinking and decision making. These lessons help children to think critically and make informed decisions in life.

6. Character

Attending school every day helps to build character. Through education and social interactions in school children can grow and discover who they are, what they believe in, and what role they wish to play in this world.

7. Values

Educated people tend to hold higher values of equality and morality. By empowering children to learn and think for themselves, they can understand the reasons for inequality and question the reasons behind it.

8. Knowledge

The knowledge gained through education helps children to navigate the world in daily life. From calculating their change when making a purchase to performing on stage, knowledge is key to providing a bright future.

9.Empathy

While education is often associated with academic learning, education empowerment teaches values such as empathy. With good education, children can learn to become more empathetic as they learn about other cultures.

Our Future Depends on the Development of These Skills

The general aim of education empowerment is to fully equip children with the right tools to become a good citizen, to provide them with the knowledge to pursue any future they desire, and to help them understand the world. Education is not about teaching a single virtue or topic, it is about developing the next generation as well-rounded human beings. It is essential to remind children that the values of life lie in co-operation, respect, and peace not in conflict and war. Children who are taught intellectually will grow to become intelligent adults who can change the world.

Education & Empowerment of Girls & Women

A significant part of our aim in educating and empowering children is to provide empowerment for girls and women also. Promoting empowerment through education to young girls equips them with the tools to become equal members of society. An educated girl is more likely to pursue a career, delay marriage and childbirth, and enjoy greater productivity both in her life and community. Teaching empowerment for girls and women in a classroom setting can also help to eliminate domestic violence against women and promote gender equality.

Educate a girl, Empower a woman.

Location

Bangkok

Overview

Bangkok is one of the most popular cities in the world, attracting about 20 million visitors annually!  Its home to nearly 15% of Thailand's population, boasts over 400 temples, and claims one of the largest Chinatowns and markets in the world.

Due to its excitement and fast-paced nature, visitors often forget that Bangkok is home to over 1 million children and 1.4 million young adults ages 15-24.  All Thais are able to go to elementary school for six years but not all are able to continue beyond that as continuing instruction is not free.

Volunteers can make a lasting impact on the lives of students through providing them access to education.  You will work directly with local children and young adults, teaching them English, computer skills, music, and arts, helping increase student confidence and preparing them to take advantage of other opportunities throughout their lifetime.

In addition to the personally rewarding nature of this experience, volunteers are able to enjoy daily life in Bangkok, explore authentic Thai cuisine, conveniently travel to other amazing parts of the country, and meet fellow volunteers who often become life-long friends.

Bangkok

Overview

One of the most special characteristics of Bangkok is how strongly the city is influenced by Buddhist culture.  The prevalence of beautiful temples and resident monks make Bangkok one of the most fascinating cities in the world.  People from all over the globe visit the capital to witness first hand the unique and inspiring traditions of monks, often seen walking around the city and interacting with fellow residents.

Volunteers will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about Thai Buddhist culture directly from novice monks.  This may include participating in or observing traditions like meditation, prayer, and the collection of alms. In return, you will help student monks improve their conversational English skills and enrich their world view by sharing information about your home and traditions.  This valuable experience will have a lasting impact on both the educational journey of students as well as the personal growth of the volunteer.
